Tactical Breakdown: Defending 5A Champions Hit the Road
The #6 Desert Mountain Wolves, the defending Arizona 5A State Champions, take their explosive act on the road to Marana to face the Mountain View Mountain Lions. Desert Mountain enters the contest operating an elite, high-octane spread passing attack that recently dismantled Arizona College Prep 42-14. Operating exclusively out of the shotgun, the Wolves utilize wide line splits to expand edge-rushing lanes. Their passing game relies heavily on mesh concepts, vertical seams, and RPOs designed to put opposing linebackers in impossible conflicts.
Mountain View counters with a physical, ground-and-pound identity. The Mountain Lions utilize a traditional downhill rushing attack, operating out of the Power-I and multiple tight end sets. Mountain View wants to establish the inside zone and fullback trap early, bludgeoning the lighter Desert Mountain defensive front in an effort to control the clock and keep the Wolves’ explosive offense watching from the sideline. Defensively, Mountain View employs a stout 4-3 over front, demanding that their defensive tackles eat up double-teams so their middle linebackers can scrape freely to stop the run and drop into shallow passing lanes.
Kickoff: Thursday, Sept 10, 2026 (7:00 PM MST)
Location: Mountain View High School (Marana, AZ)

The Trench Warfare and Secondary Integrity
Desert Mountain’s Air-Raid-inspired offense breaks down if the quarterback cannot step into his throws. If Mountain View generates organic pressure rushing only four linemen, they will drop seven defenders into a Cover 4 (Quarters) shell, completely suffocating Desert Mountain’s deeper passing windows. Desert Mountain’s offensive tackles must display perfect kick-slide mechanics to wash the Mountain Lions’ edge rushers past the pocket. Conversely, Desert Mountain’s defense must hold up against Mountain View’s power run to avoid being worn down in the fourth quarter.
